Central Eastern European RMC (Round #4)

Vysoke Myto, CZECH REPUBLIC - July 12, 2015

VPDR drivers take pole position and victory with double podiums in Senior Max & Rotax DD2

Teamwork played a vital role at the 4th edition of the Central Eastern European Zone Rotax Max Challenge on July 12, when VPD Racing arrived at the Vysoke Myto Autoklub for the first time in the 10-year history of the Austrian team and literally cleaned-up in the Senior Max and DD2 classes. The combined effort of the team drivers and technicians to be well on the pace from Friday and consistently at the top of the timesheets, proved to be a winning strategy when it came to Sunday’s competition.

Jan MR-Wünschek (AUT) was unstoppable in the 2-speed DD2 category, taking pole position and the victory in both finals. Qualifying was close against one of the local heroes who posed an obvious threat from day 1 practice, but the Austrian driver was feeling very confident with the DR package and went on to set the quickest lap in each of the lengthy races to follow. He stretched his lead in the pre-final to nearly 3 seconds after a superb start then made no mistake to secure his triumph in the 22-lap final and top the provisional standings in the CEE Zone championship with all rounds included.

JW – “The track is quite tough and tricky, but it makes a lot of fun to drive there. After Saturday’s practice we managed to find the right line and were able to fight for P1. The races went perfectly! In the end it was a very good result; we made P1 in qualifying and won both races. It was really satisfying to be back on top... so I'm happy with this.”

VPDR’s youngest DD2 driver, Samuel Hruska (SLK), christened his brand new helmet with a champagne finish to the weekend, when the 15-year old claimed a brilliant 3rd place at round 4 agianst a much more experienced field of competitors. It was the young Slovakian’s best result so far in the season since he began racing the class this year, having made the move from Juniors. At nearly 2 metres in height, Samo is putting the DR and NEK seat combination through its paces and showing the progression.

SH – “I had a good weekend from Friday when I was already one of the fastest on track, but in the excitement, I made some mistakes in the qualifying… so I wasn’t happy with myself. The pre-final start was not as good as I had in the final, but I made up for it in the last race to take P3 early and keep my position; even after I was challenged mid-race. It was a great feeling to see everyone so happy when I came into the pits. I liked how the team worked over the weekend and also that my mum was there to watch.”

In what was almost a mirror-image result of the DD2 class for VPDR, Berkay Besler (TUR) and Daniel Machacek (AUT) were truly outstanding in their performance in Rotax Senior Max to ensure a team 1-2 finish in both finals. The rookie pair has given us a taste of what they are capable of doing at previous events in 2015, when they have pushed each other to the limit until the closing moments of the race.

The Turkish driver made a faultless run in official timed practice Sunday to take pole position 0.282 seconds ahead of his closest rival Patrik Pastorok (SLK) with Machacek 3rd fastest. Besler clocked best lap again as he took race honours in the pre-final, where together with his Austrian team-mate in P2, were the only ones to break 46-seconds. With the DR Racing Kart loving the warm conditions, Besler was repeatedly dominant in the final as well to seal another successful event in European karting this year and continue to lead the CEE Zone RMC championship with only one round left to go.

BB – "Together with Team VPDR, we made our fourth race at the CEE this season where the grid was really strong as always and we knew the races would be tough. I found a good slipstream in qualifying to take pole in the pre-final and with my team-mate Daniel Machacek, were fast. Another good start in the final and being consistent helped me win again with Dani 2nd once more. The DR chassis was really good and answered all I needed over the weekend. We were consistently fast from beginning to end, so I am now looking forward to the last round. I would like to thank all the VPDR family, Emre Ergökçen for the hard work and especially our team manager Ernst Penninger... because he really wanted us to win and made sure we had the best material, set-up and support to do it."

With practically nothing separating the speed of the VPDR young guns, Daniel drove a strong race for 2nd in the final Sunday to pull a clear gap of 6 seconds from all three of the prior round winners then running bumper-to-bumper who made up the top 5. He now ranks 2nd overall in the series behind Besler and is aiming for the win in Hungary.

DM – "The weekend was for really special for me. I began as one of the fastest drivers, so the challenge was to hold the speed until Sunday. It was ideal how the team worked together – great teamwork! Zsolt my mechanic did a really good job prepping the VPDR engines and we ran the DR chassis standard... [which Danilo always says is standard for a reason!]. Ernst helped me stay focused and obviously did it well. I am hoping to keep this speed up for my first time racing at the Rotax Euro Challenge at Wackersdorf.”

In the Rotax Micro Max, the VPDR pocket rocket Zekai Özen didn’t quite manage to hang onto the podium place chance as he did the round before at Kecskemét, but the Micro driver never gave up in his battle to achieve a top 1o result the entire weekend. Zek did his best to qualify 9th as a guest driver in the RMC series race, where the 2014 Turkish champ is gaining some valuable experience within such a close level of racing. He took 10th in both finals and waiting now for the return to the Pannonia-ring for the deciding round. Local Austrian driver Helena Priester kept the momentum in her first season of racing karts as she prepares for a personal highlight this year to compete at the Speedworld circuit near Vienna in August in the Micro Max Finale 2015.
